Self Assessment Tax Returns

Whether you're self-employed, a landlord, a company director or just have complicated affairs, we prepare and file your Self Assessment return accurately, early, and with every relief you're entitled to.

The return, done properly

A Self Assessment return looks simple until it isn't: payments on account, basis periods, capital allowances, rental income, dividend and savings allowances, the High Income Child Benefit Charge, student loan thresholds, capital gains. Getting it slightly wrong usually means paying too much; getting it badly wrong means penalties and HMRC attention.

We prepare returns for:

  • Sole traders and the self-employed
  • Landlords, including jointly owned property and furnished holiday lets
  • Company directors with salary and dividend income
  • Contractors and freelancers
  • Higher earners with investment income, share schemes or pension considerations
  • Anyone HMRC has asked to file

What you get

  • Your return prepared from your records and checked by an experienced accountant
  • Every allowance and relief claimed: pension contributions, gift aid, marriage allowance, expenses you didn't know were claimable
  • A clear statement of exactly what to pay and when
  • Filing well before the deadline, and a reminder schedule so you're never caught out
  • Us as your agent with HMRC, so queries come to us first

Don't leave it until January

The return can be filed any time after 5 April. File early and you know your bill months in advance, refunds arrive sooner, and if the number is unexpectedly high there's still time to plan for it. None of that is true on 30 January.

Common questions

When is the Self Assessment deadline?

Online returns and any balancing payment are due by 31 January following the end of the tax year. Payments on account fall due 31 January and 31 July. If you need to register for the first time, tell HMRC by 5 October after the tax year ends.

Do I need to file a return?

Usually yes if you're self-employed earning over £1,000, a landlord with rental income, a higher earner affected by the High Income Child Benefit Charge, have capital gains to report, or receive significant untaxed income. If you're not sure, ask us. It's a two-minute answer.

What are payments on account?

Advance payments towards next year's tax bill, each half of the previous year's liability, due 31 January and 31 July. If your income has fallen, we can apply to reduce them so you're not lending HMRC money interest-free.

Can you help if I've missed a deadline or have returns outstanding?

Yes. We regularly bring clients up to date with late returns, deal with HMRC on penalties, and get things back on an even keel. The sooner you act, the smaller the damage: penalties and interest grow with time.
